Combo Caster

Isometric shooter

Combo Caster is an isometric shooter following a Dungeons and Dragons player that's been thrown into a dungeon by their sadistic Dungeon Master after they complain about the campaign being unbeatable and unbalanced. You are that player. Fight your way through the rooms of goblins, ogres and beholders by using magical abilities.  Obtain combo from your attacks and roll dice to change your stats and keep things interesting.

Process

I worked as part of a team of 5. After receiving the theme Repair we sat down and brainstormed. We came up with set goals to achieve and decided which we were going to focus on first. As this project was very time restrictive we only worked on one goal at a time to avoid ending up with a game that was filled with bugs.

The team was split into 2 artists and 3 coders. This worked well with my skills as I was confident with animation where the other artist was best with design and music. As a result, the other artist sketched enemy designs on paper while I digitalised them and gave them personalities through animation. While waiting for the designs I worked on particle systems to increase the feeling of playing a broken game. I also made pop-ups to help direct the game with the help of an existing font.

To keep everything easily accessible we used GitHub to share work. However, as none of us had ever used GitHub as a team before, we came across a lot of merge issues resulting in lots of work being lost or cut from the release in the last hour.

I enjoyed working with people I didn't know to make a project and seeing what I could do in that amount of time.

Team of 3.
